Cozy games are how I recover from everything else

September 1, 2026 · Marek Halvorsen

After a week of testing tense strategy matches and twitchy racers, my brain wants nothing to do with a challenge. That's where the cozy shelf earns its place.

Seedling & Stone became my nightly wind-down without me deciding it would. There's no fail state, no timer, just small honest chores and villagers who are glad to see you. It asks for attention, not performance.

I think we underrate these games because they don't spike your heart rate. But a loop that's genuinely calming is hard to design — too little to do and it's boring, too much and it's stressful. The good ones balance right on that line.

If you've been feeling burned out on your phone games, try dropping the ones that demand focus and picking up one that just wants your company. It reset my whole relationship with gaming.
